Is a pay-monthly website worth it?

A pay-monthly website swaps a big upfront bill for a fixed monthly fee. It can be great value or a trap, depending on what's included and what the contract says about ownership. Here's an honest look at both sides, including the numbers, so you can decide for yourself.

We're a pay-monthly provider ourselves, so we've tried to keep this fair. If buying a website outright suits you better, that's a perfectly good choice.

What a pay-monthly website usually includes

Most plans cover the design and build, hosting, security, backups and updates. Better ones also include changes and ongoing work to help you get found on Google. In the UK, pay-monthly websites commonly cost around £65 to £250 a month, depending on the size of the site and what's included.

The pros

  • No big upfront bill. Useful for new businesses or anyone who'd rather keep cash in the business.
  • Predictable cost. One monthly figure, with no surprise bills for hosting renewals or fixes.
  • Someone looks after it. Updates, security and backups are handled for you.
  • Ongoing improvement. With the right provider, the site keeps getting better rather than being left alone after launch.

The cons

  • It can cost more over time. Over several years, you may pay more than for a one-off build.
  • Ownership. With some providers you never own the site, so if you leave, you start again.
  • Contracts. Minimum terms of 12 or 24 months are common, and some renew automatically.
  • Domain lock-in. If the provider registers your domain in its own name, moving away can be hard.

The numbers over three years

These are rough examples to show how to compare, using typical 2026 prices from our website costs guide. Your own quotes will differ.

OptionUpfrontOngoingRough 3-year total
Freelancer build plus hosting and maintenance£500 to £1,500£50 to £300 a month£2,300 to £12,300
Agency build plus hosting and maintenance£2,000 to £5,000£50 to £300 a month£3,800 to £15,800
Pay-monthly website£0 to a setup fee£65 to £250 a month£2,340 to £9,000 plus any setup fee

The totals overlap a lot, so price alone rarely decides it. What matters is what you get for the money: how many pages, whether changes are included, whether anyone is working on your Google rankings, and whether you own the site at the end.

What to check before you sign

  • Your domain is registered in your business's name
  • The minimum term, notice period, and whether it renews automatically
  • Whether you can take the website with you, and when
  • What happens if you stop paying, and how much warning you get
  • What's included each month: changes, new pages, SEO, reports
  • Whether prices can go up, and with how much notice
  • Your Google Business Profile, Search Console and Analytics are in your name

When buying outright is better

  • You want a simple site that rarely changes, and you're happy to manage hosting and updates yourself
  • You already get plenty of work and don't need ongoing SEO
  • You'd rather pay once and own everything from day one

When pay-monthly is better

  • You'd rather not pay a big bill upfront
  • You want someone else to handle the technical side
  • You want your site to keep improving and climbing on Google, without paying a separate SEO agency

How our plans work

For transparency: our plans are £99, £199 or £399 a month with no setup fee. The minimum term is 12 months, then 30 days' notice. Your domain and Google accounts are in your name, ongoing SEO work is included every month, and once the minimum term is paid the website is yours to take with you. Questions

Is a pay-monthly website cheaper than buying one?

Not always over the long run. It's cheaper upfront, but over three years the total can be similar to or more than buying a site and paying for hosting and maintenance. The difference is what's included, especially ongoing SEO and changes.

Do I own a pay-monthly website?

It depends on the provider. Some never hand it over, some hand it over after a minimum term, and some let you buy it out. Always check the contract before you sign.

What happens if I stop paying for a pay-monthly website?

With many providers the site goes offline. With others you can take a copy once the minimum term is paid. Make sure your domain is in your own name either way, so you can point it somewhere new.

Who is a pay-monthly website best for?

Businesses that want a professional site without a big upfront bill, don't want to manage hosting or updates themselves, and want ongoing work such as SEO and changes included.
